John Peel vs Polish Death Metal

John Peel

Here’s some more illustrations from drop-d’s  series of articles remembering influential musical personalities. They’re quick and fun to do with a good bit of variety in the people that I’ve been asked to illustrate. Case in point being one week it’s the veritable  granddad of indie-rock journalism, John Peel, and the next it’s Witold Kieltyka, the talented young drummer from the Polish “technical death metal” band Decapitated.

As a slight digression, I just love the labeling of sub genres of sub genres of heavy metal, no other scene even comes close to that level of obsession in giving any slight variation in style it’s own specific title (Well, probably techno does, come to think of it). In the research for the Witold Kieltyka piece I lost a couple of hours in learning the minute differences between technical death metal, black metal, blackened death metal, and death doom metal. Fascinating.

Anyway, I’m not sure if the John Peel article has gone up yet but you can read all about Witold Kieltyka, or Vitek as he was known by the fans, right here.

Also, don’t forget Independents Day is this Sunday. It should be a great day all round. Comics, zines, readings, musical performances, workshops and film screenings galore.
